Who's Hot for Week 2

Who's going to do well this weekend?  I will give you my top five picks for each of the NFL fantasy football league positions.  After the Monday night games, I will come back and review how I did in comparison to the actual top five players at each position.

Quarterback -

1) Carson Palmer - the Browns' defense is weak, as is the entire team as a whole.  Carson usually puts up big numbers against his interstate rivals.  My prediction is around 350 yards and 3 touchdowns.

2) Tom Brady - At home - in the midst of the video recording scandal - against the team that called his team dirty and unsportsmanlike - are you really going to bet against him?  This isn't Rex Grossman, San Diego.  Their not going to shut Brady down and their not going to win.  Nothing against San Diego. The Pats aren't the kind of team you really want to motivate, and they're motivated.

3) Marc Bulger - At home - in the dome - against a team he usually dominates - again, I wouldn't bet against him.  To their credit, the 49ers' defense is getting a lot better rather quickly; I just think St. Louis is going to be very motivated to shake off their bad performance against the Panthers.  I expect the Rams to crack 30 points against San Francisco, but it might still be a tight game.

4) Peyton Manning - It's pretty hard to have a top five quarterbacks list without him, isn't it?  Tennessee's run defense was pretty stout against Jacksonville, but their secondary wasn't nearly as good.  You never know, though.  Tennessee is a pretty tough team to predict.  They have shut down Peyton in the past.  They've also been smoked by him.

5) Brett Favre - I know its not the late 90's and Brett Favre isn't at his best, but are you going to tell me that the Giants secondary is going to start stopping people. Didn't think so.  Not after Romo went off on them.  The Giants may be at home, but at the very least, they will be operating with a less than 100% QB and the Green Bay defense might be able to set him up with short field situations.

Running back -

1) Brian Westbrook - Owns the Washington Redskins. Look for him to get as many yards receiving, if not more, as he does rushing yards.  With Donovan McNabb's mobility limited, and a lack of production for the wide receivers, Brian Westbrook is going to be leaned on to perform in this game.

2) Shaun Alexander - Owns the Arizona Cardinals. Ditto the lack of production from Seattle's wide receivers. Alexander will also be leaned on heavily in this game.  I expect at least 100 yards and 2 touchdowns from him.

3) Maurice Jones-Drew - Only because he’s at home against Atlanta.  His lack of production last week might be an aberration, or maybe not. But it doesn't matter because Atlanta's offense isn't going to score and the Jags will run the ball most of the second half.

4) Rudi Johnson - Not the last Cincinnati player that's going to be listed here today. Cleveland has no chance at all of stopping this offense.  It's just a matter of how fast and by how much the Bengals get up on the Browns that will determine the amount of carries that Rudi gets.

5) Steven Jackson - St. Louis is going to need him to step it up a notch, and I think he will.  The niners gave up quite a few yards rushing to the Arizona Cardinals (no offense to Edge, the offensive line is still suspect)

What no LT!? Yes, although he's getting dangerously close to making it onto my top QBs list.  He's number six on my list and I wouldn't be very original if I threw the best player in the NFL on my "who's hot" list.  I should just create a list called "Who's the best players in the NFL."  Maybe the Pats will stop him ... probably not.  Even so, Phillip Rivers needs to step it up so everyone doesn't key on LT.

Wide Receiver -

1) Chad Johnson - Did I mention that Cleveland has no chance this weekend?  Not after the way that Pittsburgh destroyed them at home.  The only way Chad doesn't get into the end zone this weekend is if Carson forgets he's there.

2) Marvin Harrison - Nothing fancy about this pick.  Maybe he gets overshadowed by Reggie Wayne again, but one of the two of them is going to rack up fantasy points and I'm picking Marvelous this week.

3) Roy Williams - Not really heard from to much week one, but Minnesota might have a bit of trouble with that Mike Martz four wide receiver set that he threw out there against Oakland.  Minnesota better get to the quarterback early and often because Detroit doesn't have a rushing game right now and Roy will break out if he isn't double teamed.

4) Terrell Owens - I can't see Miami defense giving up 45 points, but I also don't see their D slowing down TO at all.  I'm looking at over 100 yards and at least 1 TD for the spandex clad warrior.

5) Donald Driver - Well how can I have Favre on the QB list, citing how horrible the Giants D is, without listing his main wide out?  I don't see Green Bay lighting up the Giants the way Dallas did, but 100 yards and a touchdown or two for Donald isn't out of the question.

What about Randy Moss? Didn't he look like the old Randy? Isn't he ready to break back into the scene?  Sure he will, but New England will always spread the ball around and they will use Randy Moss as a decoy for a lot of plays.  Will he get his long bomb or maybe two? Maybe, but don't expect San Diego's corners to get burned deep the way the Jets' did.

Tight Ends - (don't expect an explanation for these picks, picking tight ends to do well is a crapshoot)

1) Antonio Gates - and he will stay number one until the end of time or another team uses a tight end the way San Diego does.

2) Todd Heap
3) Dallas Clark
4) Vernon Davis
5) Kellen Winslow

Kickers -  (again don't expect an in depth reason for these picks, I'm going with the kickers on the teams that score high and those that are likely to sputter out at the 30)

1) Jason Hanson
2) Neil Rackers
3) Adam Vinatieri
4) Shayne Graham
5) Jeff Wilkens

Defense -

1) Chicago - Well, if Houston shut down the Kansas City offense ... I would not be surprised if the Bears shut out the Chiefs at home.  They will be able to key on Larry Johnson the same way they keyed on LaDanian.  How's that top 4 pick overall for Larry Johnson working out right about now?  Not nearly the production you would have liked out of that high of a pick.  It isn't even his fault; two offensive line studs are gone, quarterback problems, and a lack of wide receiving help is to blame.  And no, the 10-15 yard pass  to Tony Gonzalez isn't going to fooling many teams with so few offensive weapons.

2) Cincinnati - Surprise! Yet another pick against the Browns (poor Browns).  Cincinnati's defense did very well against Baltimore. They gave up 20 points, but they got six turnovers on Monday night and Cleveland's offense doesn't have much of a bite.  Shaky quarterbacking, not running the ball well, going to be behind early, going to have to pass a lot, Cleveland is very likely to feed the Bengals' D quite a few fantasy points.

3) Baltimore - Needing to win this game, needing to overcome the offense's struggles, the Baltimore defense may very well be playing a game against a first-time starting quarterback.  Another defensive or special teams touchdown isn't out of the realm of possibility as well.  Without Pennington, or with him nursing injuries on the field, the Jets don't stand much of a chance in Baltimore.

4) Jacksonville - At home, against Atlanta, and for goodness sakes Joey Harrington had a defensive lineman score one of two touchdowns after intercepting a pass.  Minnesota's defense may be good, but Atlanta's offense is bad.  Very bad, and that won't change until they find a decent quarterback. Let's face it, Joey Harrington is the nice guy's Ryan Leaf.

5) Minnesota - There defense is good; good enough to force at least two turnovers against the Lions.  Detroit may score their points, but the offense might also give up some points this year.  Plus, they better blitz when they can and get to Kitna as often as they can to disrupt the offensive rhythm that he showed in week one.  The Lions may not have a running game, but they might not need one for the time being with the mad genius at offensive coordinator.

There you have it, tune in next week to see the results.
