Who's Cold for Week 2

Who's going to do poorly this weekend? Here are my top five likely busts for the three main skilled positions for week 2.

*Lists do not include players not worth starting

 Quarterback –

 1) Matt Schaub – Alright, it is questionable whether you can call him a legitimate starting fantasy quarterback or not, yet. But, he’s at least in the conversation with the wide receivers on his team.  The matchup he has with Carolina on the road is a tough one, though.  If the running game isn’t there and the Panthers get up early, it could lead to Schaub turning the ball over more than once or twice.  I wouldn’t expect much more than 200 yards passing and one touchdown either.

2) Vince Young – As of right now, Vince is going to be more effective with his feet than with his arm.  He will probably be more likely to score rushing touchdowns rather than passing for them.  The way that Tennessee is trying to establish the running game combined with the way Indianapolis handled Drew Brees last week, it’s not likely that Vince will have a very productive game.

3) Jason Campbell – He didn’t play very well last week.  A chunk of his yardage was via the long bomb to Antwaan Randle El at the end of regulation.  Washington hasn’t played Philadelphia that well overall recently.  Combine that with the Eagles’ defense being the bright spot against Green Bay last week and you would be hard pressed to find anyone starting Campbell this week.

4) Matt Hasselbeck – His wide receivers need to get open more effectively.  Seattle is going to rely on Shaun Alexander a lot this game against Arizona, a team he traditionally does very well against.  This game might look a lot like the game Seattle played last week against Tampa Bay.  The one advantage Hasselbeck will have is that Arizona’s secondary is beatable.

5) Matt Leinart – He had trouble last week with the 49er’s defense.  Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin were surprisingly quiet as well.  Don’t be surprised if Arizona’s offense stalls out early and has to rely on Neil Rackers leg to put up points.

Running Back -

1) Jamal Lewis – Cleveland might not run the ball very effectively against Cincinnati.  The faster the Bengals put distance between themselves and the Browns, the less likely Jamal will see much of the ball.  It doesn’t look promising when he only got 35 yards in week 1.

2) Carnell Williams – He is likely going to be limited by injury, you might want to look at starting Michael Pittman against New Orleans.

3) Chris Brown – I’m not convinced that Chris Brown is all back to his old form of a couple of years ago.  You can’t expect him to average 10 yards a carry for a whole lot longer.  Also, there is a very good chance that Tennessee will run either LenDale White or Vince Young near the goal line. Couple that with Indianapolis’ suddenly stout D and I don’t see him getting much more than 50 yards rushing.

4) Ahman Green – Tough matchup for Ahman.  Carolina held Steven Jackson to 58 yards and forced him to fumble the ball twice last week.  I don’t think that Houston is up for the challenge on the road.

5) Marshawn Lynch – Lynch did very well in his debut against Denver, but on the road against Pittsburgh, I’d expect Pittsburgh’s defense to be able to handle him.  The only way he gets going this week is if J.P. Losman helps him out by finding his wide receivers and in the process loosens up Pittsburgh’s front seven.

Wide Receiver –

1) Deion Branch – No catches equals no starting this wide receiver  on your fantasy team.  I know Tampa Bay’s got a good defense, but you have to get open if you are your team’s best receiver.  No excuses.

2) Lee Evans – Not a whole lot better for Lee either with 5 yards total in week 1, but at least he’s got a valid excuse.  Denver might have the best corner duo in the league and he doesn’t have the greatest QB passing to him.

3) Reggie Brown – Almost non-existent against Green Bay last week. Even though he is the Eagles number one receiver, look for Brian Westbrook to take up most of the offense.

4) Laveranues Coles – Not a good matchup against Baltimore’s defense and that is compounded by the fact that Pennington is either going to be out or very limited.

5) Plaxico Burress – Same problem as Coles, not that Green Bay’s corners are unbeatable. But with both Eli Manning and Brandon Jacobs out or very limited, the Giants might be in for a long day.

We’ll see if any of these players prove me wrong and I’ll be right back here to discuss where I was wrong … next week after the Monday night games.
