Who's Hot for Week 3

Who's going to do well this weekend?  I will give you my top five picks for each of the NFL fantasy football league positions.  After the Monday night games, I will come back and review how I did in comparison to the actual top five players at each position.

Quarterback -

1)     Tom Brady – Tom can pretty much put up whatever numbers he wants right now and he might continue to try and do so to and further minimize the importance of the camera scandal.  Fact is that right now the Patriots have too many weapons on offense to be stopped by an inferior Buffalo team at home.

2)     Drew Brees – Here’s his big coming out party.  I don’t think that Drew and the Saints are going to continue to flame out.  They’ll have all the extra motivation of their first home game on Monday Night.  That and Drew is going to need to put up some points to compensate for his team’s defense.

3)     Matt Hasselbeck – The litmus test for Cincinnati’s D.  The Bengals can’t possibly do any worse on that side of the ball than they did last week.  Hasselbeck can’t possibly hand off a ball any worse than he did last week either.  But, this may be the week that Seattle’s offense breaks open.

4)     Jon Kitna – As long as he doesn’t try to do cartwheels for first downs anymore.  The Lions’ running game is almost non existent at this point; but they are completely happy to stay in that four wide receiver set for the entire game.  Point is he’s going to be passing …a lot.  At least 75 % of the plays.  Only problem with Kitna is that he’s due for about 1-2 turnovers per game.

5)     Carson Palmer – I can’t possibly take a quarterback who threw six touchdowns the week before off of the hot list, now can I.  Seattle’s D isn’t so great either.  I don’t see this game reaching the levels of ridiculousness that the Bengals played last week, but the scores will probably be in the upper 20’s or low 30’s

No Manning? Against the Texans? What are you crazy? – No, I think it will be a closer game than people think and there is a particular reason that I think Manning may not have his top fantasy game this week.

Running Back -

1)     LaDainian Tomlinson – He’s due.  He just needs a little help from Rivers.  Which he might not get and might not need.  Green Bay’s defense is good, but LaDainian is too good of a player to be consistently stopped from week to week.

2)     Joseph Addai – This is the reason Manning isn’t on the hot list this week.  Don’t get me wrong, Manning will get his.  But, Joseph Addai is going to have a big game against Houston.  Don’t get me wrong, Houston’s defense is good; but they are going to be more concerned with the passing game and that should open up Addai.

3)     Willie Parker –  At home, against an improved defense … sounds like a typical smash mouth football game for the Pittsburgh Steelers.  I would be surprised if Willie didn’t get 100 yards and a score.

4)     Clinton Portis – I’m going to pick on the Giants defense until they stop someone.  Portis had a touchdown for each of the first two weeks.  I can’t say that I think New York is going break that steak.

5)     Lamont Jordan – Off the back burner, Lamont Jordan breaks onto the scene.  He’s had two very good games and look who he’s facing this week.  Whether Cleveland’s offense proved anything last week is uncertain.  What is certain is that the defense still isn’t any good.  Lamont is going to be used in both running and passing plays, so he’s going to have a good week 3.

Wide Receiver -

1)     Steve Smith – Can’t leave him off the list this week.  He had three touchdowns against Houston and now Carolina gets to take its frustration out on lowly Atlanta.

2)     Reggie Wayne – Its Reggie’s turn to be in this spot, which probably means Marvin Harrison will do good this week.  Houston won’t be able to cover both of them, though.

3)     Randy Moss – Why not? If Randy Moss wants a touchdown right now, he’ll probably get two.  I don’t think Buffalo is prepared to stop him

4)     Joey Galloway – A hundred yards and a touchdown per game so far.  I can’t really say that I expect a depleted Rams secondary to be able to stop him.

5)     Santana Moss – No touchdowns yet this year, but he did have a good game Monday Night and the Giants have been the antidote for players lacking the end zone.

Tight End -

1)     Antonio Gates - Not dethroned yet.

2)     Kellen Winslow - Kellen is a close second behind Gates this week.  Put up a very solid week last week and he might be the best option with Oakland's tough corners.

3)     Chris Cooley

4)     Owen Daniels

5)     Tony Gonzalez

Place Kicker -

1)     Adam Vinatieri

2)     Jason Elam

3)     Shaun Suisham

4)     Josh Brown

5)     Jeff Reed

Defense -

1)     New England - J. P. Losman, starting quarterback.  I think I've said enough.

2)     Baltimore - Matt Leinart has made some mistakes this year and this is not the team you want to make mistakes against.

3)     Minnesota - They are racking up the fantasy points so far.  Kansas City is at home, but Minnesota's defense is known for stopping the run ... and running the ball is all that the Cheifs can try to do right now.

4)     Pittsburgh - They've earned there spot in the top five.  Doesn't matter who the opponent is right now.

5)     Kansas City - As good as Minnesota's defense is, is how bad the Minnesota offense is.  Not quite Notre Dame bad, but how are you only getting 10 offensive points when your defense gets you 5 turnovers?

There you have it, tune in next week to see the results.
